Perfect Slow Sunday in Madrid
Art, a winter park, and a century-old book market
Some of the best travel days are the ones with no real agenda, just a city and enough time to wander through it properly. A January Sunday in Madrid turned out to be exactly that. Cold enough to feel brisk, sunny enough to be beautiful, and quiet enough to actually feel like a local for a few hours.
The day started at the Museo del Prado, which is one of those places that earns every bit of its reputation. Velázquez, Goya, and El Greco all under one roof is the kind of morning that makes you walk out feeling genuinely moved and slightly overwhelmed in the best possible way. From there it was a short stroll into El Retiro Park, Madrid's sprawling green heart, where locals were out walking, rowing on the lake, and making the most of the winter sunshine in that unhurried Spanish way.
The real discovery came last. The Cuesta de Moyano is a tree-lined slope just at the edge of the park where open-air booksellers have been setting up their stalls for over a century. It feels like a scene lifted straight from a European film, quiet, charming, and completely unpretentious. It is exactly the kind of place that doesn't make the highlight reels but ends up being the thing you talk about most when you get home.
