4 Days in Ericeira, Portugal in January
A stunning Atlantic fishing village that hits differently in the off-season
Just 45 minutes from Lisbon, Ericeira is the kind of place that catches you completely off guard. A whitewashed fishing village with cobblestone streets, blue-trimmed doorways, and dramatic Atlantic cliffs, it also happens to be one of only a handful of World Surfing Reserves on the planet. Visiting in January meant having almost all of it to themselves, and four days turned out to be just enough time to properly slow down and settle in.
The days had a natural rhythm. Morning cliff walks with powerful winter swells crashing below, afternoons in cozy ocean-view cafés where nobody was in any hurry, evenings built around fresh-off-the-boat seafood and sunsets that got better every single night. The old town is small enough to wander without a plan and beautiful enough that every alley feels worth exploring. Watching fearless surfers take on massive winter swells from the clifftops is a bonus that never got old either.
Portugal in summer gets all the attention, but January makes a surprisingly strong case for itself. The light is golden, the vibe is unhurried, and the locals actually have time to talk. Ericeira is not a day trip, and it's not a summer-only destination. Four days felt perfect, and honestly, leaving when they did was the hardest part.
