Berlin's Abandoned Spy Station

Cold War relic, a forest escape, and panoramic city views, all on the S-Bahn

Most people don't associate Berlin with forest hikes, but Grunewald sits just a short S-Bahn ride from the city center and delivers exactly that. The journey out from Zoologischer Garten station is easy, and the transition from urban Berlin to dense woodland happens faster than expected. Once you're in among the trees, the city feels very far away indeed.

The destination is Teufelsberg, or Devil's Mountain, which has one of the stranger origin stories of any hill in Europe. It is entirely artificial, built from millions of tons of World War Two rubble that the city had no other way of dealing with. On top of it sits a cluster of abandoned surveillance domes, a former NSA listening station left to decay since the Cold War ended, now covered floor-to-ceiling in street art and open to urban explorers. Walking through it is genuinely surreal, equal parts eerie and fascinating, and the panoramic views over Berlin from the summit make the climb worth it on its own.

The whole day trip runs entirely on public transport, requires no car, and covers forest trails, Cold War history, street art, and city views in a single outing. It is the kind of Berlin experience that sits completely outside the usual tourist circuit and becomes one of the most memorable days of the whole trip.
